Argentina Praised as Model in Anti-Narcotics Efforts

The head of the US DEA praises Argentina's counter-narcotics strategy as a model for the region at a summit in Buenos Aires

The head of the US DEA praises Argentina's counter-narcotics strategy as a model for the region at a summit in Buenos Aires

The US DEA chief has praised Argentina's efforts in the fight against narcotics, calling the country a model for the region. This endorsement came at a summit of anti-drug delegates from over 100 countries in Buenos Aires.

## Background on the Summit The 40th International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC) is being co-hosted by the Argentine government and the DEA. The conference aims to strengthen information-sharing, criminal intelligence, and coordination against transnational organised crime. It has brought together delegations from more than 180 countries, according to the Argentine Presidency, to hold high-level strategic discussions.

The DEA Administrator expressed delight with the partnership between the US and Argentina, stating that the US will continue to invest resources and support operations carried out by Argentine teams. The National Security Minister of Argentina highlighted the challenge posed by transnational criminal organisations, noting that South America is home to the countries that currently top the list of global cocaine production.

## The Challenge of Transnational Crime The presence of transnational criminal organisations shapes criminal dynamics, and no country can fight this battle alone. The US Ambassador to Argentina emphasized the need for cooperation, stating that cartels and criminals move fast, and therefore, efforts to combat them must move even faster. The Argentine National Security Ministry also underlined the importance of working with allies to enforce the law, as criminal organisations do not recognise borders.

## International Cooperation The IDEC serves as a multilateral forum and collaboration platform for the international police and judicial community's fight against drug-trafficking. Sponsored by the United States, it holds annual meetings in different countries. This is the first time the conference has been held in Argentina, with the joint hosting arrangement dating back to November 2025. The conference brings together participants to share critical intelligence and coordinate law enforcement priorities against drug trafficking and related crimes.

The scale of the challenge posed by organised crime is enormous, with the National Security Minister noting that it weakens governments and institutions, destroys human capital, and deepens inequality. Without security, there can be no growth or development. The partnership between the US and Argentina is seen as a crucial step in combating this scourge.
