Amsterdam Fashion Week in 2026 marked a definitive shift for the city's fashion scene, moving away from its bad habit of always looking outward to Paris and instead gathering its own community. The week's events, from shows to late-night activations, were scattered across every corner of town and predominantly reached by bicycle, according to a report from Highsnobiety.

The week kicked off with a collaborative dinner hosted by Highsnobiety alongside Amsterdam Fashion Week. Everyone who lives and breathes fashion, culture, and art converged under one roof in a magnificent setting designed by Sabine Marcelis and SolidNature. Guests sipped vodka distilled from tulips and ate food that defied logic, including a vegetable cake disguised as a brownie that was so unreal the reporter had to ask twice if it was actually not a dessert.

Tess van Zalinge's Archival Celebration

Designer Tess van Zalinge marked her label's 10th anniversary with an archival show held in a warehouse on the city's outskirts. Rather than a traditional retrospective, she handed her archives over to three stylists and gave them creative freedom. The move mirrored her character: unpretentious and instantly familiar. "Don't get confused," van Zalinge told the reporter, "these aren't new creations." She gave out hugs while simultaneously sprinting around to ensure every detail was locked in before the show, her level of craftsmanship as sharp and current ten years ago as it is today.

Scattered Shows and Creative Venues

Other presentations continued the theme of decentralized, inventive locations. The reporter biked to a Greek restaurant tucked in the middle of a park for Love Stories. Waiting was a badminton court strung with a lace net, a kiosk showcasing the new collection, an ice-cream station, live music, and a subtle branding touch: when it was time to leave, every bicycle seat had been fitted with a custom lace cover. Biking remained by far the best way to get around.

Spotlight on Emerging Talent

The Lichting Foundation, which has spent 20 years nurturing emerging talent straight out of design school, presented its annual show. The venue was the Rijksmuseum passage, a cultural stop where a classical ensemble's music often echoes vividly. That exact spot served as this year's runway. Ten finalists, along with last year's winner, presented their work to a packed crowd. Arthur Wagenaar took home top honors, his exceptional craftsmanship and technical mastery making him a standout.

Late-Night Supermarket Runway

The week's raw energy extended into late hours, particularly at designer Camiel Fortgens's show. It didn't kick off until 10:15 p.m. For a specific reason: it was hosted inside a supermarket, meaning the team had to wait for the last local shoppers to exit before transforming the grocery aisles into a runway. Watching clothes that are actively defining contemporary fashion glide past displays of Gouda was peak Amsterdam. Highsnobiety's team was given behind-the-scenes access, with interviews available on its Instagram and TikTok channels.

The report concludes with a wish that Amsterdam Fashion Week keeps expanding while protecting the distinct, unpretentious character that sets it apart from every other fashion capital.
