Uniqlo U Ends Lemaire Era With FW26
Christophe Lemaire and Sara-Linh Tran's final Uniqlo U collection, FW26, concludes a decade-long partnership that reshaped affordable fashion with

Christophe Lemaire's creative direction of Uniqlo U will conclude with the Fall/Winter 2026 collection. This ends a partnership that began in October 2016, a period marked by Hillary Clinton's presidential frontrunner status and the robbery of Kim Kardashian in Paris.
Lemaire's partner, Sara-Linh Tran, who took over womenswear design in 2021, is also departing. Uniqlo's parent company, Fast Retailing, calls this the end of a "first chapter," indicating the Uniqlo U line will continue in some form.
A Transformative Anomaly
The initial Uniqlo U collection in 2016 was an anomaly in fashion. Lemaire had previously been artistic director for women's ready-to-wear at Hermès and ran his own label. That label was years away from becoming today's $100 million powerhouse, a growth aided by a major 2018 investment from Fast Retailing.
The collaboration was not a one-off. It was born from a successful limited "Uniqlo and Lemaire" line in 2015. Fast Retailing then established a Paris R&D Center for Lemaire, installing him as artistic director for a long-term partnership.
Shaping the Market Landscape
Whether Uniqlo is considered fast fashion or a "diet" version, Lemaire and Tran's impact is significant. They offered functional, timeless, and architecturally upscale silhouettes at accessible prices. This provided tools for building long-lasting wardrobes and influenced the broader market.
Clean lines, premium fabrics, and seasonless pieces from Uniqlo U are now seen across retailers like Zara, COS, and Massimo Dutti. What was once an inconceivable long-term symbiosis between a high-fashion designer and a mass retailer is now normal.
Other major designers have since taken similar roles. Zac Posen became Gap's creative director in 2023. Clare Waight Keller, former lead at Givenchy and Chloé, was appointed Uniqlo's first Global Creative Director in 2024. John Galliano partnered with Zara after a decade at Maison Margiela. Fast Retailing's GU brand even hired Francesco Risso after he left the luxury label Marni.
The Goal Achieved
At the project's start, Lemaire resisted putting his name on it. He wanted to bring more style into basics for people worldwide who did not care who he was. Now, many know his name. With this level of market saturation, it makes sense for Lemaire and Tran to end this era.
A Lemaire-led Uniqlo U no longer feels necessary. That, according to the source, was the goal all along. For more on foundational wardrobe pieces, see our guide on fixtures. To explore the teams behind major brands, check our squad pages.
