The Air Jordan 41, the latest flagship basketball sneaker from Jordan Brand, was developed with direct input from Michael Jordan and drew inspiration from his personal garage of supercars. Senior Creative Director Leo Chang and Senior Director of Footwear Donald "DK"Kelsey explained the process in an exclusive interview with Highsnobiety, highlighting a design ethos of intentionality and motion."DK"Kelsey, a Chicago native and Bulls fan, has been with Nike for 19 years and Jordan Brand for nearly 11."done"when it performs well in testing, the aesthetic is finalized, and the team is obsessing over minute details like colors and graphics."no gimmicks," echoing the bold but simple designs of past iconic Air Jordans.

For the 41, Jordan posed a key question: "How do you make the shoe look like it's moving even when it's standing still?" This philosophy informed the fluid, motion-suggesting nano print on the upper.

Inspiration came directly from Jordan's garage, which houses over 60 supercars, some one-of-a-kind. Chang studied their engineering, translating principles like the visible engine seen through a car's hood into the shoe's design. This is why the AJ41 has a clear shank in the sole, offering a view of the fabric-wrapped midsole and the new Zoom Air heel unit.

Kelsey shared that the team analyzed the previous Air Jordan 40 to identify improvements. They discussed the two-way greatness of Jordan's game with the athlete himself, who broke down his defensive techniques despite not having played professionally in 30 years. Jordan's consistent punctuality and graciousness during meetings set a standard for the entire team.

The hardest technical challenge was the nano print. What appears simple is an intensively layered print where any change affected the entire printing process.
